First Texan BBQ Experience

One of the things that I was anticipating the most, was to try Killen’s BBQ out in Pearland, TX.  I had heard that this place had ridiculous wait times and you either need to arrive hours before they open or late in the afternoon right before they closed.  Arriving in the afternoon is tricky though, as I heard they sell out of many of their items and will just close early if they do.  We decided to chance it and arrive around 1:30pm in hopes that the lines would be shorter, but that there would still be enough food left for us to try.

Well, it turns out we didn’t need to worry as the line was still out the door at 1:30pm.  We probably had to wait around 30 minutes before we were able to order.  We decided to order one of the meat plates so that we could try a bit of everything and the only question was how many items we should order.  You have your choice of choosing one meat all the way up to six meats.  In looking at the menu, we decided to go for the four meat plate and chose the brisket, pork ribs, sausage and pulled pork.  The meat plates also come with 2 sides, so this was more than enough for the two of us.

Of the four meats we chose, the only one that we didn’t really like was the sausage.  The casing was really tough and the sausage was super crumbly, and fell apart as soon as we cut into it.  This made it extremely difficult eat.  The other three items were phenomenal and we almost wished that we had just ordered the three meat plate instead.

At the table, they had 3 different kinds of sauces for you to use.  Unfortunately the sauces were not labeled so we weren’t entirely sure what we were eating, but they did have one that was slightly sweeter, one that was a bit tangy, and one that was spicy.

The two sides complemented the meal quite well and then to finish things off, we ordered their bread pudding.  At first we weren’t going to order dessert but we noticed a man in front of us ordering 3 bread puddings so we thought we should try it while we were here.  What a great decision as it was one of the better bread puddings I’ve ever had.

We finished eating around 2:30pm and we were surprised to find that there was still a long line up outside the restaurant.  With the popularity of this place, I had heard that they sometimes close as early as 3:00pm.

All in all, a great first Texan BBQ experience.
