Hello Kitty Planes

Hello Kitty Flight #1

I ended up taking an evening flight from Hong Kong to Taipei and when I checked in, I was provided with a Hello Kitty boarding pass.  Apparently, I would be taking one of Eva Airways’ Hello Kitty flights.  I was curious as to what this meant.  I immediately looked it up online and found that Eva Airways has a whole fleet of planes that were decorated with Hello Kitty designs.  I guess Asians really love this cat.

Our flight was delayed by about an hour and the entire time we were wondering if we were actually on a Hello Kitty plane.  When we looked online, we saw that Eva Airways had planes painted with the Hello Kitty decor, but when we looked out the window to our plane, it was just a regular Eva Airways plane.

We got the answer when we finally boarded, but it wasn’t quite as extravagant as I had thought.  I’m not sure what I was expecting (maybe pink seats?) but it was really just a regular plane with some Hello Kitty fabric over the headrests.

Even though it was almost 10pm local time, we were still served a meal and this was when all the Hello Kitty action leaped into place. First, our flight attendants started donning these pink aprons…

Then, when our meals were served, we had Hello Kitty plastic utensils and napkins.  The only thing that was “Hello Kitty” about the food was a pink chocolate on our dessert.

We checked the seat pockets in front of us and found a Hello Kitty barf bag as well.

The last Hello Kitty thing we found on the flight was the soap holders in the bathroom.

Right after the meal, the flight attendants took off their aprons and it was as if we were on a normal flight again.

What struck me as being a bit strange is that this Hong Kong to Taipei flight is a scheduled daily flight that departs at 9:05pm.  I wondered why they would choose this flight out of all their daily flights between Hong Kong and Taipei to be the Hello Kitty flight?  I would have thought it would be a better choice to choose something earlier, so that more families with kids would be on the plane?

Hello Kitty Flight #2

Without knowing it, I had booked myself on a second Hello Kitty flight on the same trip.  I was making a connection in Tokyo and so I ended up leaving the Taipei hotel super early on a Sunday morning.  When I arrived at the airport, I noticed that the entire check in area for Eva Airways was Hello Kitty-ized.

I heard that the self check in area, as well as the tram waiting area were both fully decked out in Hello Kitty decor.  However, I completely forgot to check these places out.  I didn’t realize this until I went through security and found these as I was walking towards my gate. The second picture is a mother’s nursing room.

When I finally made it to my gate, I realized that this Hello Kitty plane was the real deal.  Not only was the exterior decorated, but the interior also had Hello Kitty cushions.

I guess Westjet has Walt Disney planes and this is along the same lines.  It was just kind of funny as I was sitting next to this man who was over 6 feet tall and everything around him was just Kitty.
