A Relaxing Afternoon at Isla de Roatan, Honduras

The last port on our cruise was at the Isla de Roatan, or more specifically, at Mahogany Bay.  We didn’t end up booking an excursion for this port because none of them sounded very appealing to us.  Many of the Top 5 that Carnival recommended were actually beach excursions, which we didn’t want and then the city tours didn’t receive very high ratings, so we decided to just spend the day walking around the port.

The night before arriving into Honduras, we found out that there was actually a free beach you could go to, specifically for cruise guests.  When we docked, we discovered that Roatan is an extremely green and lush island.  We avoided the morning rush and left the ship around 10:30am and slowly made our way towards the beach.

To get to the beach, we had to first take a 700ft hike.  We had met a young lady coming back and she warned us that it was a difficult hike, but for us it was quite easy, even while wearing flip flops.

It was only 10:30am in the morning but this was probably the hottest day we had experienced during our cruise.  We could see some dark clouds forming over the ship but it was so hot that rain might not have been a bad idea.

We found an empty clamshell and then decided to take a quite dip in the water to cool off.  It wasn’t until we came back to the clamshell that we realized we actually needed to pay for those, and so we then had to set out and try to find some other beach chairs.

We didn’t last long on the beach chairs as it was such a hot day.  Not before long, we were back in the water again and spent most of the hour there.  We probably would have stayed in the water longer had it not started pouring.  With no sign of letting up, we decided to head back to the ship instead of waiting out the rain.  It was a good decision as it kept raining for the next couple of hours or so.

Roatan is a beautiful island and it’s too bad the rain cut short our beach stay.  I’m happy that we didn’t purchase any excursions and chose to spend the day on the beach instead.

Once we were back on the ship and the weather cleared up a bit, we were able to take some nice pictures of the island.  This was the only time on our cruise where my camera fogged up due to the humidity.  This shows you just how hot and humid that day was.
