When You Visit a Place Called House of Pies…

Anyone who likes any sort of pie would be intrigued by a restaurant with this name.  There are two locations in Houston and it just so happens that one of them was only about 5 minutes from our hotel, so we made a point to try this place on our last night in Houston.

We were surprised to find that this place had a bit of a diner feel to it, comparable to your local Denny’s.  They served full dinners, but of course the pies are what most people come for.  In fact, their pie menu was probably as large as their full dinner menu.

I ordered a hot chicken salad and it is something I probably wouldn’t recommend.  The chicken was stir-fried with onions and peppers and that part was really delicious but it was placed on a bed of lettuce and other vegetables and due to the seasoning of the stir-fry, you couldn’t really use any salad dressing, which meant the salad was super dry and tasteless.

The waiter told us that the Bayoo Goo Pie is their signature pie that everyone comes for, but he did warn us that it is on the sweet side.  Well, if it is the pie that everyone comes for, then how can I leave without trying it?  The description from the menu was more than enough to sell me on it:

Chopped pecans with sweet cream cheese under our perfect mix of vanilla and chocolate topped with whipped cream, powdered sugar and chocolate shavings

We also ordered a slice of their Key Lime Pie, which is listed under their specialty pies section.  The Key Lime Pie had a perfect blend of sweet and sour and complemented the sweet Bayoo Goo Pie very well.

There is a good reason that this place is called House of Pies.  Come for the pies (but perhaps eat dinner elsewhere first!)
