Hotel Review: Rain Forest Retreat

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 nights at the Rain Forest Retreat.  During my entire G Adventures tour, this was the only property in which our guide did not stay with us, as he joked that it is a bit too nice for him.

Well, he probably wasn’t kidding as much as we thought at first, because this property is quite amazing.  It actually reminded me of many of the places in Canmore/Banff, with that outdoorsy cabin feel.

The room I was in had a king bed, along with a sitting area with big windows and a full kitchen.  Tucked into a corner was another single bed, beside a little desk.  Heated towel racks appear to be quite popular in New Zealand as this is one of a few properties we stayed at that offered this.

The room also had a huge wrap around balcony.  It’s too bad the weather was so rainy while I was there, as it would have been nice to spend some time out on the balcony.

The property also had an amazing restaurant on site, where I ended up having dinner twice and breakfast once.  The breakfast is the only thing that wasn’t up to par, as it offered a very very plain breakfast selection of bread, pastries, yogurt, pancake and bacon.  The morning that I went for breakfast, I was the only one in the dinner room and there weren’t even any staff members, so I just seated myself and started helping myself to the food.  The funny thing is, the restaurant isn’t even open for breakfast on Sundays, so on the day we checked out, we ended up having to order breakfast elsewhere.  Dinner was amazing though, so the restaurant definitely focused more on the later dining times.

I found out later on that the property actually had a variety of accommodations, including some more economical hostel type rooms as well as some standard hotel rooms as well.  However, if it falls within your budget, the retreat type rooms are definitely highly recommended.
