Japanese Parfaits

All throughout Japan, you can see these visual displays of ice cream parfaits at markets, malls, and even just in booths along the streets.  I first saw these displays in Kyoto and at the time, wasn’t able to try one, so I made it a priority to do so when I reached Tokyo.

We were on Odaiba Island and came across this one café that sold cakes and parfaits so we had some high expectations.  The menu that they presented was small and we were only able to choose from handful of items.  This made our anticipation even higher!  If this place only specialized in a few kinds of parfaits, they had to be good, right?

We ended up ordering two kinds to try – one with chocolate ice cream and one with strawberry.  To our disappointment, they weren’t nearly as good as we thought they would be.  In fact, the ice cream tasted like cheap, ice cream from any supermarket and the presentation of the chocolate parfait in the ultra slim glass wasn’t that attraction to me either.

Perhaps the next time, we will need to head to a café that specializes in parfaits instead of going to a bakery like café.  I had noticed many much more attractive parfaits while walking around Japan, so it was unfortunate that our one experience wasn’t quite up to par.
