The Roman Colosseum

We were only going to be in Rome over the weekend and both the Colosseum and Vatican City were on the top of our lists.  Seeing that the Vatican is closed on Sundays, we left that for Saturday, which meant Sunday was devoted to the Roman Colosseum area.

I highly suggest pre-purchasing your tickets ahead of time.  You will end up paying a €2.00 booking fee, but for me, the advantage of not having to wait in line far outweighs the minimal cost.  You can pre-purchase your tickets at the official Roman Colosseum website

In the end, we still ended up waiting in line for about 20 minutes before being able to enter the Colosseum.  Upon entering, we also decided to line up for a video player to take with us into the complex.

As expected, there were quite a few people inside, but what surprised me was that it was a bit smaller than I had expected.  We didn’t end up signing up for the underground tour as we were short on time, but I have heard great reviews of that tour, which can also be booked on the same website at an additional, minimal cost.  Perhaps if we had signed up for the tour, the complex would have seemed larger.

The video player helped a great deal and was able to introduce many facts about the Colosseum that we had not known about previously.  All in all, we spent about an hour walking around the complex, watching the videos and enjoying the surroundings.
