An Overcast Morning in Vienna

After a light breakfast, I ended up at Naschmarkt and wished that I hadn’t eaten any breakfast so that I could have eaten there instead.  I was pleasantly surprised with how big the market was and although there were many “repeat” stalls, I still felt that it was one of my favourite places in Vienna, as I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the market.  Stall after stall offered a wonderful aroma of local foods, produce and specialty items that you can only ever find at markets like this one.  Mixed into this were some restaurants that offered cover from the rain.

One thing that jumped out at me is the number of Greek and Middle Eastern foods that were for sale.  There was stall after stall selling falafels, shawarmas, baklava, and other delicious Greek and Middle Eastern specialties.

After visiting Naschmarkt, I made my way to the Freud Museum.  Unfortunately, no photos were allowed inside, although there really wasn’t much to photograph.  One thing that I learned was that Freud had a huge interest in traveling and there was one quote I found that I really liked “…we are bringing nothing home but fond memories” I felt like this quote was very suitable for me and described my traveling style to the tee.

The museum showcased the area where his patients waited for their appointments, and then also displayed the rooms where he assessed and counselled patients.  It was surreal to be in that room where he and his patients once were.

I then made my way to Burggarten, which was once a royal garden and houses a memorial to Mozart.  The garden was smaller than I expected but very beautiful nonetheless.

I must have walked through the Graben area about 10 times in the 3 days that I was in Vienna.  The Stephansdom Metro Station was used by me as a base for the entire inner core area and Graben is conveniently located right outside one of the metro exits.  The area is home to Michaelerkirch, one of the oldest Romanesque style churches in Vienna as well as the entrance to Hofburg Imperial Palace

Aside from these important landmarks, the area is also home to many different restaurants, cafes and shopping areas and is often packed with tourists.

Of course, the most famous of all the landmarks in this area is likely Stephansdom, the most important Roman Catholic church in Vienna.  Unfortunately the church is under restoration at the moment, but admission was complimentary when I walked past there one night.

It was an overcast morning that turned into a beautiful day and wonderful end to my trip to Austria.
