Texas BBQ in Austin

I remember thoroughly enjoying Texas BBQ in Houston a couple of years ago, and when I found out that I was going to be visiting Austin, I knew that a trip to a BBQ joint was inevitable.  There are countless BBQ places in Austin and everywhere we went, we asked the locals which place they preferred.  The answers varied a great deal, which told me that you are likely to get good BBQ everywhere you go in Austin.

If you research BBQ in Austin, one of the first places that pop up is likely Franklin Barbecue.  However, if you are like me, and don’t want to start lining up at six in the morning and wait 5-6 hours for food, I would suggest going somewhere else. We were in Austin on a weekend and arrived at La Barbecue around 10:20am on Sunday.  The place opened at 11am and when we arrived, there were probably already 20 people in front of us.  It wasn’t too bad of a wait, because the line moved quite fast as soon as they opened.

We ordered about a ¼ lb of pulled pork, a ¼ lb of brisket, one regular sausage link, a beef rib and some chipotle coleslaw.  Our bill came to around $55USD, but it is because the beef rib alone cost $34USD.  We were a bit taken aback by the price, as it was much cheaper when I had BBQ in Houston a couple of years ago, but the couple next to us paid $95 and the table of 3 next to them paid $250, so I guess we did pretty well.

Our first bites were reserved for the $34 beef rib and we regretted it right away.  The beef rib was so good that we knew everything would likely pale in comparison, regardless of how good it is.  The beef rib was one of the juiciest, most tender pieces of meat I had ever had.  The fat and the flavours were a perfect combination and if we hadn’t ordered everything else, we likely would have lined up again just to order a second beef rib!

The rest of the meat was also very good, but again, after the first bites of the beef rib, our expectations were sky high and nothing else could compare.
