The Modern Toilet Restaurant

If you’re reading the title and thinking…what?  You’re not alone!  Leave it up to the Chinese to come up with strange (albeit a bit interesting) restaurant concepts.  The idea started in Taiwan but the chain has now spread to Greater China and South East Asia.

I have visited two toilet restaurants, the first in Shenzhen and then in Shanghai.  The Shenzhen one wasn’t quite as impressive as the only things I remember are a table consisting of a glass top on a bath tub and poop shaped cushions and light fixtures.  The food was not expensive but was just mediocre in terms of taste.  The Shanghai restaurant was much more elaborate and you are exposed to toilet décor the moment you walk through the entrance.  The restaurant was a classier, artsier version of the one I’d been to in Shenzhen, and the food was also much better!

Each table consisted of toilet bowl seats and the place settings were all toilet themed as well. Food and drinks were all serviced in miniature toilet bowls, bathtubs or urinals.   We ended up ordering some pasta and a mocha.  It wasn’t the most delicious thing we’d ever eaten, but still very good.  Given the concept of this place, it was definitely worth trying out.
