Colourful Coffee in Australia

I have never been one to enjoy fancy coffees, but I did hear that Australia offered some of the best coffee in the world and I was excited to drink my fair share of these while there.

I eased myself in and started off with a couple of flat whites, since that is a specialty down there.  The first couple of days, I would start my breakfast with a flat white and thoroughly enjoyed this addition al my morning routine.  By the time I got to Melbourne, I had discovered so many variations of lattes that I just had to try as many as I could.

I heard about a black sesame latte at White Mojo and immediately knew I would go out of my way to try it, as black sesame is one of my favourite flavours for everything.  Along with the latte, the waitress recommended a fruit toast with chocolate that was very pretty, but way too sweet.  Unfortunately, the waitress also forgot to put my order of the latte in, so after waiting for a long time, I finally asked another waiter about it and they brought me a regular latte, which then needed to be corrected to the black sesame latte.  All in all, the whole experience wasn’t the best, especially since when it came time to pay, the original waitress wanted to charge me for both lattes, one of which I never even consumed.  However, the second waiter was much better and asked her to only charge me for the regular latte, even though I had the black sesame one.

I had heard that there was a café that sold kaya lattes, and since kaya is not something that I can easily find in Canada, I purposely went out of my way to try this.  I arrived at Operator 25 on a Sunday morning and although crowded, there were still a few seats available.  The décor of the café was really neat, as it really brought the telephone theme to life.

The kaya latte wasn’t very strong and had I not known that it was supposed to be kaya flavoured, I likely wouldn’t have even known.  The food was also very good, but quite expensive, as this simple meal costed over $25AUD!

The next stop for colourful coffee was at an Indonesian café near my hotel in Sydney called Kusuka.  This pink watermelon latte was by far my favourite coffee of all the ones I’ve tried.  They had so many different ones on the menu that I wanted to try, but in the end, I think I made a good choice.  Although, I doubt you could make a bad choice there.  The latte was so pretty and the subtle watermelon flavour added just the right amount of sweetness.  As I went there for breakfast, I decided to try one of their congees and that turned out to be delicious as well.

One more place that I wanted to mention was a place I went to for soufflé pancakes called The Brothers Café.  I got there just as they were opening so I pretty much had the whole place to myself.  I ordered the thai soufflé pancake with a flat white, and although I’m not usually a fan of pancakes, I wanted to try these soufflé ones as they are not commonly found in Canada.

Although not as fluffy and high as ones the ones in Asia, the pancakes were light and airy and quite enjoyable.  It’s definitely more of a dessert than a breakfast item though, as it felt strange eating something so sweet so early in the day.

The coffees definitely created a huge dent in my wallet, as these are not cheap, but when would I ever be able to try all of these again?
