First Meal In Melbourne

I arrived into Melbourne in the early evening and after dropping my bags off at the hotel, it was time to venture out for some food.  My first stop was at Calia Emporium, which had raving reviews from multiple sources.  The restaurant is located inside a mall and has a storefront that sells many Japanese products.

Even though I arrived after 8pm and it was set to close by 9pm, the restaurant was packed.  However, I didn’t have to wait very long for a table and within minutes I was already munching on their Umami fries and sipping on my Hojicha Latte.

The fries were delicious but definitely made for sharing, as it was a very large portion.  I was contemplating between ordering the sukiyaki bowl or their signature wagyu bowl, which was almost 5 times the cost.  In the end, I decided to just have the sukiyaki bowl, as I often prefer sukiyaki anyways.

The bowl was good, but not amazing.  Perhaps I had unfair expectations as I had read such wonderful reviews of this place. The beef was tender and the egg was cooked perfectly, but there was just something lacking.  Perhaps a special sauce would have elevated the dish that little bit.
