My First Chinese City Wall

I was quite excited to visit the Xi’an city wall, as I knew that it has a very important historical significance to the city.  I knew that people were permitted to climb to the top of the wall, and I was quite excited to do this.  What I didn’t expect was that the city wall was…just a wall.

I don’t know what I was expecting exactly, but after paying the entrance fee and climbing the flight of stairs to the top, we were excited to see the views of the city, which included the rooftops of many homes.

After this, we kept looking around for something to see, but we were left with this view:

There were barely any people on the wall with us and absolutely nothing to see.   Being such a big tourist attraction, I thought the top of the wall would be lined with vendors selling souvenirs and food, but I guess in order to keep the wall as clean as possible, they do not permit any sales of food or drinks.

The only vendor we came across was a bike rentals booth.  You could rent a bike at several locations along the wall to take a ride along the 13.7km wall.  However, we were a bit unimpressed with the scenery and decided to forego this.

he city wall is an amazing sight that surrounds the inner part of the modern city.  However, I don’t know that I would pay to climb the wall again, as the views weren’t fantastic and there really isn’t anything to do once you’re at the top.
