The Tang Dynasty Show

Xi’an was the capital of China during the Tang Dynasty, which is considered one of the most important historical eras of Chinese history. Due to this fact, there is still quite a large influence from the Tang Dynasty within the city today.  Not only is one of the largest parks in the city named Tang Paradise, but Xi’an is also home to a very popular show, appropriately named the Tang Dynasty Show

The show took place inside this beautiful building with a great deal of Tang art.  Even the restrooms were tastefully decorated with Chinese art.

Upon entering the theatre, you immediately realize that this show is one of those things that are completely catered to foreigners.  Almost every single seat in the place was taken up by a foreign tour group.

There are two ticket options – show only or dinner and show.  We opted to go with the show only ticket as we felt that the price of the dinner was not worthwhile.  For the next 2 hours, we were entertained by various dances, songs and Chinese instruments.

I half expected there to be a story with the show, but it was more just act after act of dancing and songs.  After a while, the show actually got to be a bit long.  The costumes were amazing, and I felt that if our group hadn’t been living in China for so long, we would have been a bit more impressed.  However, because we had all been living in China for a while, the music and dancing were weren’t completely unfamiliar for us and so we did find the show dragged on a bit.
