Hotel Review: Regal Riverside Hotel

I had chosen the Regal Riverside Hotel in Shatin for a one night stay because it was one of the most economical choices during the time I was in Hong Kong.  Shatin is located in the New Territories and is considered by some to be quite far from central Hong Kong.  In reality, on a good day, you can probably get to Shatin within 20 minutes from Kowloon.

The lobby of the hotel was very grand and had a South East Asian theme.  Even the uniforms worn by the hotel staff made it look and feel like we were in the Philippines or Thailand.

We booked a standard room and were pleasantly surprised at the size of the room. I had previously stayed in hotels in the Mongkok area and although the prize is almost exactly the same as what we paid for the Regal Riverside, the rooms were 1/3 the size.  Even our bathroom was probably larger than entire hotel rooms in Mongkok.  With our room rate, each person also received a  $50HKD voucher for use in any of the 10 restaurants at the hotel.  Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage of this as the dining options were quite expensive at the hotel and we were looking forward to eating at Hong Kong’s many cafes and restaurants.

The hotel is located between Shatin MTR and Shatin Wai MTR stations.  From the Shatin MTR station, there is a complimentary hotel shuttle bus that runs every 20 minutes, which will pick you up and take you to the hotel, and is extremely convenient if you have luggage.  The hotel also offers shuttle buses to TsimShaTsui East, Hong Kong Disneyland and the Hong Kong Airport.  We were able to make use of the complimentary shuttle service from the airport to the hotel, which ended up saving us $120HKD per person.  It was part of an online special when we booked our room, so I’m not sure if the complimentary service is always available.  You can browse this Regal Hotels shuttle page for more information.

Overall, we had a very nice stay at the Regal Riverside.  Upon check out, we took advantage of the complimentary shuttle bus once more and were dropped off at Shatin MTR station.  The only downside to the hotel is that it is located quite far from city centre, which is where most of the attractions are.  If you don’t mind the 20-30 minute metro ride into the city centre, and would rather stay in a quieter area, this may be a very good option for you.
