Ngong Ping Village & Big Buddha

The day we decided to visit Ngong Ping Village was a rainy one.  We made our way to Tung Chung MTR Station to catch the Cable Car, which would take us across Tung Chung Bay to Ngong Ping Village.  You will find the entrance to the Cable Car Station directly across the exit of the MTR station.

It was a weekday and likely due to the weather, the place was quite empty.  We only had to wait a few minutes before it was our turn to board the Cable Car.

There are 2 types of cable cars, and both advertise a 360° experience.  The standard cable car is similar to any cable car you may have seen before.  There are windows on all sides for a 360° view.  The Crystal Cabin is an upgrade (in both experience and price) and includes a glass floor as well, so that you can also see the water beneath you.

We chose to take the regular Crystal Cabin and once abroad, we were able to take in the views of the Tung Chung Bay below us.  The entire ride lasted about 25 minutes, but only the first half of the ride was over the water.  As we slowly approached the Big Buddha, we were riding over land.

After arriving at Ngong Ping Village, we realized that the Big Buddha was still quite a bit of a walking distance, so we decided to fully explore the village before making our way over to the Big Buddha.

We finally reached the base of the Big Buddha and were faced with the looming 268 steps ahead of us to reach the top.  Once we reached the top, there were a number of smaller Buddhas along with the Big Buddha that sat at the top of the hill.

The Big Buddha is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Hong Kong and is usually packed with people, and understandably so.  The neighbouring Ngong Ping Village should also not be missed either, as it is a neat little place selling many souvenirs and is an interesting place to walk through either before or after visiting the Big Buddha.
